Dawn Staley Says Her ‘Hand Was Shaking’ After Surprising Fan Request

The South Carolina Gamecocks head coach Dawn Staley was calm and confident during the team’s Elite Eight game against Duke. Ultimately, that confidence paid off as the Gamecocks won 54-50 in a tense last few seconds of the game. But one moment with a fan after the game made Staley a little nervous, she lightheartedly admitted.

A fan approached Staley and asked her to sign their baby’s bottom. The Athletic captured a video of the moment.

A reporter from the AP asked Staley during the post-game press conference, “Have you signed a baby’s behind before?”

“Oh, no, that was a first,” Staley said. “And my hand was shaking too.”

The cute moment was captured from different angles and shared on social media.

After the game, fans were also seen throwing shirts, hats and posters to Staley for her to sign.

Dawn Staley Thanked the Crowd for Their Support

Dawn Staley celebrated the team’s big win by thanking the crowd in Birmingham.

Staley said: “You made us feel special. You put women’s basketball on the map, so we appreciate you. And if y’all get the bid again I hope we are here… To our fans, we don’t win this game without the energy you put into this building today, so I thank you. I’m always thanking you because you’re always doing your part. ”

Staley was also seen showing love to the South Carolina band after the game and celebrating the big win with them too.

don’t probably get enough credit that they deserve. They are at all the sporting events, they are injecting energy. … No matter what we’re doing… it just feels familiar… I really enjoy them… Some of them have been hare over the past four years… They really are part of the atmosphere that’s created in the gym.”
The game was a nail-biter from beginning to end, with the Gamecocks coming out ahead 54-50.
After their last difficult win in the Sweet 16, Staley disputed the idea that they were in an easier region.
“We’re a resilient group…” she said in a post-game press conference. “People thought we had the easiest region. I didn’t think so. It’s not easy at all. It gets harder. Because we’ve gotta play Duke. I just think our team has been through so much. They’re unshakeable, you know, they’re unflappable.”
She continued: “Our conference gives us a lot of … confidence to be able to be in a tight-knit game, and find a way to win because that’s what it’s about at this stage of the game.”
