Duke’s Jon Scheyer Sends Clear Message About Mike Krzyzewski Amid NCAA Tournament
The Duke Blue Devils, once headed by head coach Mike Krzyzewski, are now under the reign of Jon Scheyer.
Scheyer has the Blue Devils in position to compete for a national title this season with Duke preparing for a Final Four matchup against the Houston Cougars.
During the NCAA Tournament, as the Blue Devils gear up for Houston, Scheyer joined the “Pat McAfee Show” where he spoke on the importance of the Duke brotherhood.
Scheyer mentioned that Krzyzewski has continued to play a major role at Duke and he’s “lucky” to get pointers from arguably the greatest coach in college basketball history.
“Coach K is a huge part of the Duke brotherhood and I’m lucky to have him to talk to,” Scheyer said. “Duke is all that I know and the passion from all of the former players is incredible.”
Krzyzewski served as the head coach at Duke from 1980 to 2022, establishing himself as an NCAA legend. During his time with the Blue Devils, Krzyzewski led Duke to five national titles, 13 Final Four appearances and 15 ACC Tournament titles.
Before taking over as the Duke Blue Devils’ head coach, Krzyzewski served as the head coach at Army from 1975 to 1980. He also worked as an assistant coach at Indiana from 1974 to 1975.
Scheyer has been the head coach at Duke for the past three seasons. He’s led the program to a trip to the Final Four as well as a previous run to the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament.
This season, Duke is led by freshman Cooper Flagg, who is a finalist for the Naismith Player of the Year award.
Flagg has averaged 18.9 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.4 steals per game, leading Duke in all four categories.
