Florida Gators get positive news about QB DJ Lagway that comes with more questions
The Florida Gators are fully entrenched in their spring practice right now and things are looking good across the board. Head coach Billy Napier spoke after practice held in The Swamp on Tuesday and gave some good news about quarterback DJ Lagway, saying he played some snaps during practice today.
However good that is, it’s notable that Lagway didn’t throw.
DJ Lagway returns to practice field without throwing
It’s great that Lagway is back on the field, but it’s a concern that he is still not throwing. At the beginning of spring practice, Napier spoke to the media and referenced a shoulder injury.
“I think some lower body, some shoulder,” the coach said of Lagway’s issues. “I think our intentions here are to be very smart. I do think he’ll be limited in throwing activities, but he’ll participate in all practices otherwise. We’ve done a lot of homework here relative to the things he went through as a player. He was an absolute warrior. And a great competitor that showed toughness. And we’ve consulted with quite a few experts here from UF Health, from a national perspective. … I think in general, he’ll be able to do quite a bit. But there will be some limitations.”
It’s a real concern that Lagway still hasn’t thrown the football, as the hope would be he could do so before the end of spring practice. Shoulder injuries are brutal for quarterbacks because it’s a major source of their throwing power.
That notwithstanding, it’s still important that Lagway was able to practice at all. That is a good thing. It’s also good for the other quarterback on the depth chart, as they are getting valuable reps, especially if they have to play in Lagway’s place.
This will be the biggest story of the summer and one that won’t stop until he starts throwing regularly.
