BREAKING: NFL Drops Jahmyr Gibbs Announcement Following Lions-Vikings
The Detroit Lions and star running back Jahmyr Gibbs hosted the Minnesota Vikings in arguably the biggest regular-season finale in NFL history.
There was so much at stake as both teams were 14-2 entering the game. The winner would not only win the NFC North crown but also secure the No. 1 seed in the NFC, meaning they would have home-field advantage until the Super Bowl and a first-round bye in the playoffs. The loser would fall to the No. 5 seed and have to go on the road in the Wild Card round.
The Lions held just a 10-6 lead at the half, then ran away from Minnesota in the second. Gibbs was spectacular in the 31-9 win, taking 23 carries for 139 yards and three touchdowns. He also added five receptions for 31 yards and a touchdown through the air.
The second-year running back was worthy of an NFL announcement on Wednesday as he was named the NFC’s Offensive Player of the Week.
The announcement came while also recognizing Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Yaya Diaby as the NFC Defensive Player of the Week and Chicago Bears defensive back Josh Blackwell as the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week.
“NFC Players of the Week! (Week 18),” the NFL wrote on social media.
Gibbs made history on Sunday against the Vikings, breaking NFL legend Barry Sanders’ franchise record for most touchdowns in a single season. Sanders set the mark with 17 scores during the 1991 season, and now Gibbs is the Lions’ all-time leader at 20.
“Just being able to have a record close to his [Sanders], or I broke it, but being in the same talk with him is just crazy,” Gibbs told ESPN.
The former Georgia Tech and Alabama running back is up to 1,929 total yards on the season.
