Florida Gators lose talented defender to the transfer portal before the end of spring practice

The Florida Gators have lost a player to the spring window of the transfer portal, as redshirt freshman safety Gregory Smith will be entering in the coming days. Smith is the first Gators player to declare his intentions to enter the transfer portal this April.

Gators S Gregory Smith plans to enter transfer portal

The Gators’ defensive backfield is in an interesting place. Smith had a path to some playing time this year but was slated to be a backup, and it could get really crowded, especially if Asa Turner is granted the medical redshirt he applied for.

As a true freshman, Smith played in five games where he earned five tackles and a pass breakup.

-vs. Samford: Made first collegiate appearance at DB recording one tackle and a pass break-up.
-vs Kentucky: Made SEC debut at DB.
-at No. 5 Texas: Played fifteen snaps on defense at safety.
-at Florida State: Saw action at safety where he played 49 snaps recording three tackles (two solo).
-Gasparilla Bowl vs. Tulane: Saw action on defense notching one solo tackle.

This will hurt the depth for the Gators in the secondary, but they have players ready to step up. The Gators did bring in multiple defensive backs, including multiple four-star safeties in Hylton Stubbs and Lagonza Hayward. They also have grad transfer Micheal Caraway Jr. who is likely to play STAR for the Gators this year.

Don’t be surprised if there are more players who choose to enter the transfer portal, as spring practice will end up giving players more information on how things sit on the roster.
