On Saturday afternoon Cam Ward broke the Miami single-season record of 3,642 passing yards and 262 completions set by Bernie Kosar in 1984. Ward set the passing yardage record with a 13-yard completion to running back Damien Martinez in the second quarter.
The Miami completion record was set by Ward on a 15-yard pass to Xavier Restrepo in the third quarter. Ward finished 27-38 for 289 yards with two touchdowns and one interception versus Wake Forest. Ward previously broke Malik Rosier’s single-season record for total yards that he set versus Georgia Tech.
With 275 total yards on Saturday, Ward now has 3.951 in 2024. Ward is closing in on becoming the first Miami player to have over 4.000 passing and total yards in a season. Ward now has 3,773 passing yards with one game remaining. The Miami single-season pass attempts record is also within reach.
Brad Kaaya in 2016 and Stephen Morris in 2012 each had 421 pass attempts. Ward now has 399 pass attempts in 2024. Ward should pass Kaaya and Morris for single-season pass attempts next week at Syracuse. Three weeks from now Ward should be the first Heisman Trophy Finalist since Ken Dorsey and Willis McGahee in 2002.
Ward is having the best single season for a quarterback in Miami history. He has extended his record for the most TD passes in a single season to 34. Additionally, with the four records he has set, Ward has surpassed three different Miami QBs, and that will increase to five when he breaks the Hurricanes’ attempts record.
Ward still has a lot of legacy left to create at Miami. What happens next Saturday at Syracuse and beyond will determine how Ward is remembered in Coral Gables. Ward has led Miami to 10 wins for the first time since the Hurricanes finished 10-3 and played in their only ACC Championship Game in 2017.
