Detroit Lions Make Historic Sam LaPorta Announcement
Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta put together another impressive campaign in the 2024 NFL regular season.
In his second year as the No. 34 overall draft pick out of Iowa, LaPorta reeled in 60 catches for 726 yards and seven touchdowns.
These 60 catches tack onto the impressive totals he secured during his Pro Bowl rookie season in 2023. With 144 career catches, LaPorta now holds the all-time reception record among tight ends through two seasons.
The Lions recognized LaPorta’s historic accomplishment with a social media announcement on Friday.
“Sam’s been getting after it!” the team wrote on X.
While LaPorta holds this record for now, there’s a solid chance his mark gets shattered in 2025. Tight end Brock Bowers set the all-time record for catches by a rookie tight end with 112 in his debut season with the Las Vegas Raiders, earning first-team All-Pro honors.
With the help of LaPorta’s solid production in the receiving game, the Lions finished the 2024 regular season with a 15-2 record and the No. 1 seed in the NFC.
After the wild-card round, Detroit will face the lowest remaining seed in a divisional-round contest at Ford Field next weekend.
