An unfortunate foot issue has caused two-time major winner and former U.S. Open champion Jon Rahm too much pain to compete at Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina this year. But the 156-man field has to be filled out by someone, so his loss will be one other golfer’s gain.
That golfer is 24-year-old Jackson Suber, who according to golf insider Jeff Eisenband (initially reported by Bunkie Perkins on X) will be replacing Rahm both in the field and in the group being shared by former major winners Jordan Spieth and Hideki Matsuyama.
Suber currently ranks 44th in the Korn Ferry Tour, where he has made the cut 21 times in 33 events and has six top 10 finishes. He went pro in 2022 after playing amateur golf at Ole Miss.
“(Jackson Suber), a 24-year-old who is currently 44th in the @KornFerryTour standings, will get Jon Rahm’s spot as alternate. That means Suber will tee it up with Jordan Spieth and Hideki Matsuyama. Suber is also currently listed in the field for the KFT’s @WichitaOpen this week,” Eisenband wrote.
This won’t be Suber’s first PGA Tour event though it will obviously be his biggest. He has competed in two PGA Tour events but has yet to make the cut.
Will Suber shock the world with a big showing at the U.S. Open?
Suber, Spieth and Matsuyama will tee off at 1:36 p.m. ET on Thursday from the front nine.
