Tony Vitello is getting a lot of attention right now, and for all the right reasons. The Vols’ skipper led the program to its first-ever national championship last month. He’s also managed to raid the transfer portal this month, setting up the Vols as a top contender for Omaha again in 2025.
Oh, yeah, and Tony was simply Tony in the celebration in the aftermath of the title, to the joy of many and the chagrin of a few.
As such, that makes him the perfect person to be on camera when a pair of Tennessee Vols expect to hear their names called in the coming days during the 2024 MLB Draft. Entertainment value and insight are things that Vitello is certainly not short on.
Major League Baseball has reportedly agreed, as Vitello will be a part of the draft’s television coverage on the MLB Network for the second time in the last three years, per Go Vols 247’s Ben McKee. Vitello will be a part of the broadcast team covering Day 1 of the draft, which includes rounds 1 and 2.
Christian Moore, who will reportedly be in attendance at the draft, should be the first Vol taken, and he will likely go somewhere in the middle of the first round. Billy Amick could end up finding himself taken at the end of the first round. In the second round, a handful of Vols are potentially in play in Drew Beam, Blake Burke, and Kavares Tears.
However, as is the case in any sport’s draft and certainly was with Dalton Knecht in the NBA Draft last month, projections are often off base and slides can happen. Pleasant surprises can also happen, too.
Regardless, it will be cool to hear Vitello give his thoughts over the air on whichever of his players end up hearing their names called on Sunday night.
