Former Ohio State star playmaker has a chance to cap off a feel good story in Super Bowl 59
One of the best parts about the lead-up to Super Bowl 59 is all the great stories. For two weeks we get a chance to get to know all of the players who are participating, their backstories, and on a deeper level. That is true of former Ohio State star Parris Campbell, who will be playing in his first Super Bowl on Sunday for the Philadelphia Eagles against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Campbell is actually the only former Ohio State player who will be playing for either side.
Most Buckeye fans remember Campbell as a dynamic playmaker who was nearly unguardable in his final season in 2018. During that campaign, the speedster was able to haul in 90 receptions for 1,063 yards and 12 touchdowns. That production, on top of his overall athleticism, was a big reason why Campbell was selected in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts.
Unfortunately, Campbell’s NFL career has not lived up to expectations. Injuries and inconsistency have plagued his career, recording just 123 receptions for 1,117 yards and six touchdowns during his six seasons with the Colts, Eagles, and New York Giants. He has not made the impact most in Columbus expected.
This 2024 season also didn’t start the way Campbell would have liked. He was initially cut coming out of training camp, and was relegated to the practice squad for the majority of the season. It was a situation that he was admittedly not excited about, and one that made him think long and hard about his future.
“If this is the only opportunity that I have, to go be on a practice squad, I’m done with ball, and we’ll figure out what’s next,” Campbell told Akron Beacon Journal that he one time thought.
Campbell opted to roll with an unfortunate situation, and found himself active on the roster a lot recently. He now heads into the biggest game of his life with a chance at a bit of a redemption story.
Even if Campbell doesn’t play much for the Eagles on Sunday, he is a great example of perseverance to the highest level. The Eagles look to pull off a moderate upset against a Chiefs team that has won three out of the last four Super Bowls. For Campbell, this is the chance at a feel good story, and a moment he will remember forever.
