We have just learned that Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens may have possibly acquired an Andrei Vasilevskiy.
At least, a goalie with better statistics than Vasilevskiy, in the same league and at the same age.
We know that since Carey Price’s departure, many analysts believe that the Canadiens need to find his successor if they really want to become a Stanley Cup contender again.
So who could be the worthy successor to Carey?
We can obviously think of Samuel Montembeault, Cayden Primeau, and Jacob Fowler, but there is another name not to be forgotten.
Yevgeni Volokhin has numbers like Andrei Vasilevskiy
Could the young Russian goalie, selected in the 5th round by the Canadiens in 2023, be the next Ilya Sorokin, Igor Shesterkin, Vasilevskiy, and company?
In any case, his statistics seem to indicate that this is a possibility.
Statistics of Yevgeni Volokhin and Andrei Vasilevskiy in the season following their draft year:
Yevgeni Volokhin (MHL): Record of 22 wins, 4 losses, and 4 overtime losses / Goals against average of 1.57 / Save percentage of 0.938
Andrei Vasilevskiy (MHL): Record of 17 wins, 6 losses, and 4 overtime losses / Goals against average of 1.93 / Save percentage of 0.930
Let’s wait and see, but it looks promising! In any case, the numbers are there!
Obviously, we’re not saying that Volokhin will automatically be an NHL star goalie, but based on the statistics, let’s just say he seems to have been an excellent 5th-round pick for Montreal!
Volokhin, 6 feet 3 inches and 170 pounds, is a name to watch for Canadiens fans.
His transition to the KHL will be crucial for his future. If he continues to dominate, but this time in the KHL, then we can really start to get excited.
