Over the weekend Newcastle United fans have felt a tinge of excitement that has long been absent this summer.
Finally, the Magpies looked to be making moves in the transfer market. Not only that, but we have an England international in our sights – probably the most consistent player in England’s ranks at Euro 2024 at that.
Newcastle had reportedly beaten everyone to the punch and opened talks with Crystal Palace over a move for 24-year-old centre-back Marc Guehi.
It was reported at the start of the window that Newcastle and several other clubs were watching Guehi and yet, despite his brilliant showing at Euro 2024, it was all quiet on the western front.
Liverpool could be Newcastle’s big rivals for Marc Guehi
Many of the other clubs credited with an interest in Guehi went on to acquire different players to fill their defensive voids and Newcastle looked to have full focus on AC Milan’s Malick Thiaw.
Until Friday when it came out that Newcastle and Palace were in talks over a Marc Guehi move.
Naturally, it wasn’t long before other clubs started to be linked, most of whom have already done their defensive business, but one club’s name gave us cause for concern … Liverpool.
Newcastle have a Plan B if Guehi bid fails
Liverpool’s transfer business has been slower than ours, and we thought if anyone could turn Guehi’s head it would be them.
Mercifully though, The Boot Room has reported that they don’t believe Liverpool will challenge Newcastle for Guehi.
It’s amazing how we can choose to believe ‘sources’ with no direct quotes when we want to, isn’t it?
In all seriousness, we don’t know how much TBR actually knows, but for now we are going to take comfort in the fact that Newcastle are the only players at the table and that Marc Guehi is widely reported as being keen on the move.
That being said, inews have suggested that Guehi isn’t the only defensive deal being worked on, but stopped short of naming names. So if the Guehi deal folds, all is not lost.
