After the trade between the Montreal Canadiens and the Pittsburgh Penguins, Kent Hughes received three draft picks.
We’re revisiting a past trade that was completed a year ago because a lot has changed since then.
On August 6, 2023, the Canadiens completed a three-team trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins and the San Jose Sharks, involving no less than 12 assets.
In hindsight, it’s clear that Kent Hughes pulled off a bit of magic with this trade. Think we’re exaggerating?
Here’s why it’s hard to call it anything else.
Kent Hughes turns Mike Hoffman and Rem Pitlick into THREE draft picks
The general manager of the Montreal Canadiens effectively turned two «undesirable» players, including Mike Hoffman (who had negative trade value), into three draft picks.
Yes, it’s an excellent move!
Here are the full details:
The Canadiens parted ways with Mike Hoffman and Rem Pitlick to acquire Jeff Petry, Casey DeSmith, prospect Nathan Légaré, and a 2025 second-round pick.
Casey DeSmith was then traded for a 2025 third-round pick and Tanner Pearson.
Jeff Petry was sent to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for Gustav Lindstrom and a 2025 fourth-round pick.
Nathan Légaré was traded for Arnaud Durandeau at the end of the year, but Durandeau did not re-sign with the team.
In short, here’s what Kent Hughes gave up and received:
ACQUIRED BY MTL
2025 second-round pick
2025 third-round pick
2025 fourth-round pick
37.5% retention of Jeff Petry’s contract (ending in 2025)
TRADED BY MTL
Mike Hoffman
Rem Pitlick
It’s really solid, and quite the return for Hoffman and Pitlick, let’s admit it.
Will Kent Hughes pull off another transaction this August? Let’s not forget the one involving Sean Monahan two years ago.
