When Vincent Desharnais signed with the Vancouver Canucks as a free agent, he didn’t know what kind of reception to expect from Edmonton Oilers fans.
On the Jason Gregor show, Desharnais reflected on his time with the Oilers and said he was grateful to see the support coming from them when he signed with a division rival.
It was a tough decision for me but seeing how happy everyone was, for me, it was really nice… It made me feel a little bit better about it
– Desharnais
Desharnais was a 7th round selection of the Oilers in 2016, and he debuted with the NHL team in 2022/23, before playing almost every game for the Oilers last season.
The 6’7 defenceman said he saw his former Oiler teammates at McDavid’s wedding recently, describing it as a sort of bittersweet reunion – saying he’d miss the players and fans.
It’s going to be weird playing against the boys next season… seeing all the boys it was so cool to see how happy they were for me, how excited they were, but it was also very sad, it was kind of the last times that we would spend together and not hit each other and try to slash each other.
– Desharnais
The Canucks liked what they saw of him as an Oiler, and rewarded him with a 2 year deal worth $4 million – a deal the Oilers would not match.
