Former Maple Leaf Tyler Ennis has provided fans with his insight into what it’s like to play with superstar forwards Auston Matthews and Connor McDavid.
Auston Matthews has been the talk of the NHL recently, with reports indicating that he will be named the new captain of the Maple Leafs this Wednesday. Matthews had an outstanding season with the Leafs last year, leading the league with 69 goals and totaling 107 points — both career highs for the former 1st overall pick.
In a recent episode of the Spittin’ Chiclets podcast, former Maple Leaf Tyler Ennis opened up about what it’s like to play with Auston Matthews and Connor McDavid. Unsurprisingly, Ennis says there’s nothing quite like it.
Ennis commented on how exceptional both Matthews and McDavid are:
”I would say the similarities are that they’re so unattainably good. You know what I mean? So first of all, just their natural talent is crazy. Connor, same deal. First practice with Connor, you’re like, that’s not a human.”
Ennis had this to say on the podcast of skating with Matthews:
”Way more skilled than me, and he’s six foot three, jacked and he shoots the puck like Joe Sakic, you know what I mean? So you’re like, this is a different beast right here. He’s got Patrick Kane skill, shoots the puck.”
Ennis mentioned some big names while comparing Matthews’ skill set. Comparing Matthews to McDavid is particularly noteworthy, given McDavid’s consistent dominance as the league’s best player.
Matthews is entering his ninth NHL season and is expected to head into the season with the “C” stitched onto his sweater in Toronto, and he will certainly face significant challenges in his quest to lead the Maple Leafs to their first Stanley Cup since 1967. No pressure or anything, Auston.
