An official suspension could be coming soon for Indiana Fever star point guard Caitlin Clark.
Clark, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft, led the Indiana Fever to a blowout win over the Seattle Storm on Sunday afternoon. But during the game, she was hit with a controversial technical foul. Clark smacked the bottom of the basket in frustration and was hit with a T.
“I got a technical for basically being mad at myself because I missed a 3, and then I went and hit the backboard, and he told me it was disrespectful to the game of basketball,” Clark said postgame. “…It reminded me of the technical I got in college, where I said ‘damn it,’ where it’s like a personal frustration. Had nothing to do with my team, had nothing to do with the reffing, had nothing to do with the other team. It’s just because I’m a competitor.”
She added: “But I think he fired me up to continue to play a lot harder. I thought we got a lot better after that. I want to thank him for that. But overall, I thought once we got to that media timeout around five minutes in the third quarter, I thought we all kind of took a breath. It was all chaos there for two and a half minutes.”
A suspension could be coming soon for Clark, though. The No. 1 overall pick in the ’24 WNBA Draft has received five technical fouls this season. If she receives two more, she’ll be hit with an automatic one-game suspension, per WNBA rules.
That would obviously be a huge blow to Clark and the Fever, who are playing themselves into playoff contention.
Clark had a big game on Sunday, scoring 23 points, dishing out nine assists and grabbing five rebounds. The Fever improved to 13-15 on the season.
They can’t afford to lose Clark, even just for a game.
