Arkansas Razorbacks Wehiwa Aloy Named SEC Player of the Week

Arkansas shortstop Wehiwa Aloy has been recognized for his impressive start to the 2024 season, earning SEC Player of the Week honors. The league office announced the award on Monday following Aloy’s outstanding four-game stretch, which included a near-cycle performance and a clutch offensive presence that helped propel the Razorbacks to a 6-1 record through their first seven games.

Aloy’s Explosive Week at the Plate

Aloy showcased his ability to deliver in key moments, going 8-for-14 (.571) with a double, two home runs, and five RBIs over four games. His week culminated in a dominant 4-for-4 performance against Michigan, where he reached base in all five plate appearances and finished just a triple short of the cycle. This performance was a significant turnaround from his struggles at Globe Life Field last season when he went hitless in 13 at-bats.

Throughout the weekend in Arlington, Aloy was a force at the plate, hitting .545 (6-for-11) with two home runs, a double, and five RBIs. His first homer of the weekend came in a narrow 3-2 loss to Kansas State, a solo shot in the sixth inning. He followed that up with another solo blast in Arkansas’ 8-6 victory over Michigan, further solidifying his status as one of the team’s top offensive threats.

Leading the Razorbacks’ Offense

Aloy has been the driving force behind Arkansas’ early-season success. Through seven games, he leads the team in hits (10), total bases (20), and on-base percentage (.563). He also shares the team lead in home runs (3) and batting average (.417) with his younger brother, Kuhio Aloy.

His ability to get on base and create scoring opportunities has been instrumental in Arkansas’ strong start. In Sunday’s win over Michigan, Aloy opened the scoring with a first-inning double and later added two singles and a home run to complete his perfect day at the plate. His solo homer in the fifth inning off the foul pole helped secure the Razorbacks’ fourth win in their last five games.

Looking Ahead

With Aloy leading the charge, Arkansas is poised to build on its early momentum. The Razorbacks return home to Baum-Walker Stadium for a 10-game homestand, beginning with a matchup against Grambling on Tuesday. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m., and the game will be streamed on SEC Network+.

As the season progresses, Aloy’s hot start has set the stage for what could be a breakout year for the talented shortstop. If he continues to deliver at the plate, Arkansas will have a formidable offensive leader as they navigate a challenging SEC schedule.
