Penn State Football: Who Won “Competitor of the Day” at Each Position as Winter Workouts Begin?

The Penn State Football team is officially back together for winter workouts after breaking through to the program’s first College Football Playoff appearance in 2024.

With high expectations for the team heading into 2025, Penn State will look to develop the roster through strength and conditioning ahead of spring practices.

Every year, during winter workouts, each of Penn State’s position coaches highlights a player that “won the day” as the competitor of the day for winter conditioning. Here are the winners for the first workout for the Nittany Lions:

Quarterback: Drew Allar

QB1 for Penn State stepped up in the first winter workout, leading the way in the quarterback room and earning a competitor of the day shoutout from QB coach Danny O’Brien.

Allar returns for a fourth season in Happy Valley in 2025 after passing for 3,327 yards and 24 touchdowns last season.

Running Back: Quinton Martin

Redshirt freshman Quinton Martin played in six games last season, keeping his redshirt intact thanks to the new rule that players can play in four games plus the postseason while keeping their redshirt.

Martin rushed 13 times for 32 yards and caught three passes for 18 yards in 2024. With Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen back in 2025, Martin will look to compete for the RB3 job, barring injury to either starter.

Wide Receiver: Kyron Hudson

Penn State is looking for a complete reset at the wide receiver position heading into 2025.

With the top two receivers, Harrison Wallace and Omari Evans, transferring out of the program and two new faces coming in.

One of the newbies, Kyron Hudson, already made his presence known to wide receiver coach Marcus Hagans in the first winter workout. At USC last season, Hudson caught 38 passes for 462 yards and three touchdowns.

Tight End: Joey Schlaffer

In 2024, it was the Tyler Warren show for Penn State at tight end. The presumptive first-round pick caught a program record 104 passes for 1233 yards and eight touchdowns in 2024 for the Nittany Lions.

Heading into 2025, Penn State will be looking to replace a ton of production at the position. Redshirt sophomore Joey Schlaffer stepped up during the first winter workout to claim the competitor of the day nod from tight ends coach Ty Howle. Schlaffer has yet to record a stat in two seasons with the Nittany Lions but did play in four games last season after redshirting in 2023.

Offensive Line: Drew Shelton

Rising senior left tackle Drew Shelton earned competitor of the day nods from offensive line coach Phil Trautwein for the first winter workout.

Shelton stepped in nicely for the Nittany Lions in 2024, filling the left tackle slot occupied by former first round pick Olu Fashanu. Shelton will enter his second season starting at left tackle for the Nittany Lions in 2025.

Defensive Line: Zuriah Fisher

Penn State Football, Deion Barns Penn State defensive line coach Deion Barnes greets defensive end Zuriah Fisher (36) before the start of a NCAA football game against Massachusetts Saturday, Oct. 14, 2023, in State College, Pa.

Zuriah Fisher missed the 2024 season with an Achillies injury after playing in all 13 games for the Nittany Lions in 2023.

With Abdul Carter set to be one of the top picks in the 2025 NFL Draft, Fisher will have the opportunity to compete for the second starting spot at defensive end opposite Dani Dennis-Sutton in 2025. Fisher has recorded 22 tackles, four tackles for a loss, and 3.5 sacks in his five-year career for Penn State.

 Linebackers: Kari Jackson

Redshirt freshman Kari Jackson earned the nod as competitor of the day in the Penn State linebacker room for the first winter workout. Jackson redshirted in 2024 and did not record a stat for the Nittany Lions. Jackson was a three-star recruit out of West Bloomfield, Michigan in the Nittany Lions 2024 class.

Cornerbacks: Elliot Washington

Elliot Washington is one of the fastest players on the Nittany Lions roster heading into 2025 and earned competitor of the day honors from cornerbacks coach Terry Smith for the first winter workout. Washington played in 14 games for the Nittany Lions last season, recording 26 tackles, 6 defended passes, and an interception.

Safeties: Zakee Wheatley

“Takeaway King” Zakee Wheatley stepped up in a massive way last season for the Nittany Lions, stepping in for the injured KJ Winston after one and a quarter games and starting at the second safety spot the rest of the way. With Jaylen Reed off to the NFL, Wheatley is now the veteran presence in the room heading into 2025.

Specialists: Riley Thompson

Riley Thompson earned competitor of the day nods from Penn State special teams coach Justin Lustig.

Thompson is entering his third season as the starting punter for Penn State. He holds a career average of 44.7 yards with 162 career punts.

While we can’t take too much out of winter workouts, its great to see the Nittany Lions back together and preparing for the 2025 season. Penn State will start spring practices in exactly a month, after pushing spring practice back due to the Nittany Lions extended postseason run in 2024.
