Cooper Flagg receives lofty comparison from Hall of Famer

Duke freshman Cooper Flagg has been one of the most electrifying players in college basketball this season. Now, his name is being mentioned alongside an NBA legend.

Through 28 games, the 18-year-old star is averaging 19.4 points, 7.6 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 1.1 blocks and 1.5 steals per game, leading Duke to a 24-3 record and a No. 2 ranking in the Associated Press poll. He has also been efficient from beyond the arc, shooting 37.5 percent from three-point range.

His ability to impact the game on both ends of the floor has made him the centerpiece of a Duke squad with national championship aspirations. Whether scoring in transition, facilitating for teammates or anchoring the defense, Flagg has consistently delivered impressive performances against top competition. His defensive instincts, in particular, have separated him from other elite prospects, as he regularly disrupts passing lanes and contests shots at a high-level.

Flagg’s dominance has caught the attention of Hall of Fame coach Jim Boeheim, who recently compared him to Larry Bird, one of the greatest players in NBA history. The comparison is significant, as Bird’s name is rarely attached to young prospects due to his unique skill set and legendary career.

Appearing on “Don’t @ Me with Dan Dakich,” the former Syracuse coach didn’t hold back in his praise, emphasizing Flagg’s well-rounded skill set and defensive impact, as shared by MSN.

“Cooper Flagg, he’s the best all-around player in terms of doing all the things in college basketball that I’ve seen,” said Boeheim. “I mean there’s better shooters, better rebounders, better passers, but he’s a defender.”

“I think he is almost – to me, he’s Bird-like, a little bit. Except he is quicker, faster, more athletic, doesn’t shoot it as well, but his shot’s coming.”

At 6-foot-9 with elite defensive instincts, Flagg has lived up to the hype as the consensus No. 1 pick in the upcoming 2025 NBA Draft. His ability to score, rebound and protect the rim has made him one of the most complete players in college basketball. Though Bird was known for his elite shooting and playmaking, Flagg’s defensive prowess, athleticism and versatility make him a unique prospect.

As March Madness approaches, Flagg will have the perfect stage to solidify his status as the top prospect in the NBA Draft. A strong tournament run could further validate Boeheim’s high praise and cement Flagg’s place among the most exciting young players in the game.
