Prominent hockey insider Elliotte Freidman discussed Connor McDavid’s contract extension with the Edmonton Oilers during his latest 32 Thoughts segment.
It was recently announced that Leon Draisatil just signed a massive 8 year contract extension worth $14 million AAV. With that in mind, fans look to the next big point of business, captain Connor McDavid.
With the ink barely dry on Leon Draisaitl’s contract extension, it seems a near certainty that Connor McDavid will sign an extension of his own when the time comes. In Friedman’s words, “Draisaitl’s not staying without a heads up from McDavid.”
“This was not a Leon Draisaitl negotiation, this was a Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid negotiation.”
Friedman also implies that there’s no number the Oilers won’t consider for McDavid’s extension. “If McDavid asks for 20% (of the salary cap, the maximum allowed by the CBA), they would give it to him.”
This is all part of the 16-14-10 plan as per Bob Stauffer. The 16-14-10 plan, (which is quite brilliant if I may add) are strategic steps the Oilers will make to ensure the long term success of the club. Last week marked a significant milestone in achieving the first step of this financial plan. The other 16-10 are McDavid’s and Bouchard’s projected contract figures when they re-sign in 2025-25.
It’s not secret that the pair are best friends on the team, and there seems to be a historic trend with franchise players retiring in the city that drafts them. All things considered, I don’t think fans have much to worry about in terms of McDavid re-signing in Edmonton.
