Carlton Palmer admits that West Brom have exceeded his expectations this season as the 2024/25 season got off to an impressive start.
The Baggies have had a superb start to the campaign and find themselves in second place, ahead of both Leeds United and Burnley.
Carlos Corberan’s men are also just two points behind league leaders Sunderland who have managed to win all four of their games thus far.
Speaking to Football League World (9 September) Palmer admitted his shock about the Baggies being second in the table.
“I didn’t envisage that Sunderland would be top of the league unbeaten, and I didn’t envisage West Brom being second,” Palmer said.
“I thought West Brom would be around the play-offs, but Sunderland, I didn’t expect their transformation to take place as quickly as it has done in such a short period of time.”
West Brom could make the automatic promotion spots
Carlos Corberan has done a terrific job at West Brom since being appointed as their manager.
Last term the Spaniard got the club into the playoff places and although they failed to get into the final, the fact that they managed to get there in the first place was an achievement in itself.
Mikey Johnston has had his stay at The Hawthorns made permanent after a strong end to the campaign last term, with Josh Maja also like a new signing after his injury hell last year.
It’s still far too early in the season to make predictions about where they will finish but should the Baggies manage to keep up this level of performance, there’s no reason why they couldn’t stay within the top two come the end of the season.
Especially once all of the Baggies’ new arrivals such as Callum Styles [WBA] and Mason Holgate have been fully integrated into the first-team fold.
