The top spokesman inside West Ham has responded to Hammers News about the injury to Niclas Fullkrug and on transfers.
West Ham were rocked yesterday when it emerged Niclas Fullkrug has picked up an injury.
The big German striker withdrew from his national squad to return to West Ham due to an Achilles tendon and calf issue.
That has had fans licking their wounds and bemoaning the ‘West Ham striker curse’.
Having been on the bench for all three Premier League games so far, Fullkrug has not even had a chance to get his West Ham career up and running.
Technical director Tim Steidten stated he felt Fullkrug was the perfect forward to lead West Ham’s pacy, powerful attack.
It was felt Fullkrug’s hold-up play would get the very best out of the likes of Mohammed Kudus, Jarrod Bowen, Lucas Paqueta and Crysencio Summerville around him.
Hammer blow for West Ham and Fullkrug
Julen Lopetegui was facing pressure to start Fullkrug at Fulham. The 31-year-old’s goal against Hungary added to the weight of that pressure.
Now injury has put paid to any chance of that.
West Ham have until Saturday to sign any free agents on the market. That’s when final squad lists are submitted to the Premier League.
Lopetegui confirmed he would look at out of contract players once the transfer window closed.
West Ham have been linked with moves for defenders John Egan and Joel Matip.
Indeed Egan even played a behind-closed-doors friendly for West Ham against Dagenham and Redbridge.
Lopetegui has made it clear he wants two senior players in every position. But he currently only has three central defenders fitting that description in Jean-Clair Todibo, Max Kilman and Konstantinos Mavropanos.
Hammers News has reached out to the top spokesman inside the club for an update on both situations.
West Ham respond on Fullkrug injury and chances of transfer
West Ham have responded on the Fullkrug injury and the chances of a late transfer.
In terms of Fullkrug, it’s bad news for the Hammers. But could be worse.
The German will be out for two or three weeks.
“Fulkrug is back today and it looks like a 2-3 week injury, it’s NOT ideal!” the West Ham spokesman exclusively told Hammers News.
Regarding signing Egan, Matip or anyone else for that matter, it’s not being entirely ruled out just yet.
“There’s a small chance we sign a player,” the spokesman added.
“But our budget is really spent.”
Board source makes worrying worst case claim
When it comes to Fullkrug, it seems it really could be worse. And West Ham must tread very carefully indeed.
The striker has had a terrible time with injuries across his career.
Fullkrug has been relatively injury free in recent seasons, though.
West Ham board source Sean Whetstone has claimed Fullkrug’s issue could take months to heal.
“Hammer Niclas Fullkrug is thought to be suffering from Achilles tendinitis rather than rupturing or tearing his Achilles tendon,” Whetstone said.
“Tendonitis treatment usually takes two to three weeks to recovery although it can take a few months if you have a severe case of tendonitis. The best way to speed up your healing time is to rest.”
