It matters’: Izzy Higginbottom’s All-SEC women’s basketball snub frustrates Mike Neighbors

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas women’s basketball guard Izzy Higginbottom made unfortunate history Tuesday.

Higginbottom became the first player to lead the SEC in scoring and not be awarded an All-SEC team designation. She averaged 23.9 points in the regular season, which ranked fifth nationally.

Despite her scoring title, the 5-7 guard was not one of the 17 players — nine on the first team because of a tie and eight on the second team — selected by the league’s coaches.

“I gave her a Papa Neighbors quote first,” Arkansas coach Mike Neighbors said Tuesday, recalling an earlier conversation with Higginbottom. “Which was, ‘It’s better to not get an award that you deserved than to get an award that you didn’t deserve.’
