Joel Matip left Liverpool this summer as a free-agent after the defender’s contract with the Reds came to an emotional end.
The former Schalke 04 star spent eight years at Anfield as Matip established himself as a Liverpool cult hero having won the UEFA Champions League, Premier League and multiple domestic honours under Jurgen Klopp.
With Premier League clubs interested in signing Matip as well as Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen, it’s quite surprising that the 33-year-old defender is yet to join a new side despite having such an illustrious career with Liverpool.
Yet that could be about to change with West Ham now in the picture for Matip.
West Ham to hold further transfer negotiations with Matip
According to Ruhr24, West Ham are set to hold further negotiations with Matip over a potential signing, with the report stating that numerous Bundesliga clubs have tried and failed to sign the former Liverpool star.
With West Ham looking to add yet another defender to their ranks this summer, Matip could be an ideal signing for the east London side given his immense amount of experience in the Premier League with Liverpool.
Moreover, the former Merseyside centre-back won’t be tarnishing his legacy with Liverpool if he was to move to West Ham, with the Irons hardly considered a rival for the Reds despite some good contests over the years.
Indeed, Matip is still good enough for the Premier League and is more than ready to return to England to play for a club like West Ham, where the defender can take on a leadership role for the Irons.
