Former Penn State QB Explains Why He Quit Coaching Job After Two Days
Former Penn State quarterback Matt McGloin has had an interesting couple of weeks. His decision to resign as Lackawanna County commissioner and begin his coaching career at Boston College made news. Then his decision to quit his first coaching job two days later made even more news.
Yesterday he explained his decisions, as written by Borys Krawczeniuk of WVIA News.
“I apologize to the people of Lackawanna County for the way things have played out,” he said in a telephone interview. “I’m sorry if I offended anybody. My intentions, I know, have always been good. I always try to do the right thing and what’s best.”
He acknowledged that the offer to coach at Boston College came about quickly, which didn’t give him as much time as he needed to make a thorough decision.
“I had only a few days or so to really make this decision, and I wasn’t able to talk about it,” he said. “Things in the professional football world, things in the college football world move very fast.”
McGloin was initially excited about being in Chestnut Hill, but that all quickly changed.
“There’s no way that this is going to work for me, being away from my family for an extended period of time,” said McGloin. “And that moving our children from the only house they’ve ever known, it wasn’t the best for them.”
His decision to return to Pennsylvania then became an obvious one.
“Reality set in that I’ve created a whole new life for my family, a new path for my family, a new path for me, and how much that was going to impact them,” he said. “So, I called my wife. I said, ‘Bailey, I’m coming home.’”
McGloin does not know what he will do next, but it won’t involve working in politics in Lackawanna County, especially since his resignation as commissioner is scheduled to be accepted this morning, and he definitely won’t be coaching at Boston College.
