Rory McIlroy is “super focused on golf” in the middle of his ongoing divorce, according to a new report from PEOPLE.
McIlroy filed for divorce from his wife Erica Stoll earlier this month after seven years of marriage. The couple have been together for nine years and have a three-year old daughter.
A source told PEOPLE that McIlroy, 35, is pouring himself into his craft as he tries to regain the form he had earlier in his career.
“He’s just trying to find himself, focus and get back to winning,” the source says, adding that McIlroy “went through such a winning phase,” but “and hasn’t done much in the last five-ish years.”
McIlroy has actually won eight PGA Tour events since 2021, including two already this season, but he hasn’t taken home a major since winning the 2014 PGA Championship.
Overall, 2019 was McIlroy’s winningest year on tour, as he won four tournaments, including The Players Championship and The Tour Championship.
Additionally, PEOPLE reported that the ongoing situation involving the PGA Tour and LIV Golf took a toll on McIlroy, who felt like a “sacrificial lamb” for his public stance against the Saudi-based organization.
“Plus, he put his blood, sweat and tears into defending the PGA against LIV golf the last two years and it was basically for nothing,” the source said, referring to the pending merger between the two rival factions.
A report last week from Us Weekly indicated that McIlroy’s wife was “feeling lonely” in the marriage from the amount of time her husband was spending on the road.
“Rory was a hard person to be married to,” the report said.
