Newcastle United have been in the market for a new winger and the latest target linked to the club is certainly eye-catching.
It was a miserable summer of transfer business for Newcastle. The Magpies left it late and missed out on all of their top targets.
A new centre-back was a top priority with Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles both out injured, but Newcastle failed to lure Marc Guehi to St James’ Park despite multiple bids.
A new right-sided winger was also on the shopping list with Miguel Almiron’s future at Newcastle cast into doubt.
The club identified multiple targets, including Nottingham Forest’s Anthony Elanga, but sporting director Paul Mitchell again failed to get a deal over the line and now Mitchell’s position is under threat.
A new winger is still at the top of Newcastle’s list and a former Premier League champion has now emerged as a potential target.
Newcastle United linked to Leroy Sane
According to CaughtOffside, Newcastle have shown an interest in Bayern Munich’s Leroy Sane and will consider a move for him as he approaches the end of his contract.
Sane’s deal with the Bundesliga giants is set to expire in 2025, which would allow him to join a new club as a free agent.
The report adds that Eddie Howe is a “big fan” of Sane and that Newcastle are considering making offers in the region of £25m (€30m) to test Bayern’s resolve amid contract talks.
Bayern are willing to offer Sane a new deal but hope to agree terms on a lower salary for the 28-year-old German winger.
Leroy Sane is out of reach for Newcastle United
Newcastle’s links to Sane will raise eyebrows, but there is a good chance that the club is being used to help Sane pocket a higher wage.
According to The Independent, Sane has been earning approximately £386,000-a-week at Bayern since his move from Manchester City in 2020. That is well and truly out of Newcastle’s price range.
Sane would have to take a significant pay cut to join Howe’s side, but he has already made it clear to Bayern that he does not want to reduce his wages.
There is no doubt that Sane – a two-time Premier League champion with Manchester City – is exactly the type of player that Newcastle need, but supporters should not get their hopes up about his links to Newcastle.
