Sugar Bowl matchup between Notre Dame and Georgia postponed in the wake of the tragedy in New Orleans
This wasn’t the way everyone wanted to welcome in the new year, waking up to the news of the tragedy in New Orleans. Overnight, at least ten people were killed and more than 30 injured when a man drove a vehicle into a crowd in the Bourbon Street area of New Orleans. The FBI is treating the situation as an “act of terror”, and has been sweeping the French Quarter for signs of devices.
With Notre Dame and Georgia set to face off on Wednesday night at 8:45 PM Eastern time in the Sugar Bowl, a lot of uncertainty quickly arose surrounding the event. It was initially described as a “wait and see situation” but there was some optimism that the game would be played.
It has since been reported that the game will indeed be postponed by multiple sources. It is now reportedly scheduled to be kicked off on Thursday at 8:45 PM Eastern time in the Caesar’s Superdome. The authorities will continue to monitor the situation, and make sound decisions for the safety of the players, coaches, and civilians affected.
WDSU-TV in New Orleans first reported the news, and several others have since been verified. The Sugar Bowl has not yet issued an official statement, but the early reports are not promising. The “District Attorney of New Orleans Parish Jason Williams told ABC News that the game will be played on Thursday instead of Wednesday night.” Our team at A to Z Sports will be sure to update once more information
