The New York Jets’ formidable defense, considered among the league’s best, faces a potential challenge in 2025.
Star cornerback D.J. Reed, a key contributor to the unit’s success, is set to become a free agent and has expressed no interest in signing a contract extension this season. With significant financial commitments to other top players looming, the Jets may face a difficult decision regarding Reed’s future.
One potential replacement for Reed is San Francisco 49ers cornerback Deommodore Lenoir. At 26 years old, Lenoir has emerged as a reliable starter and could offer a younger, potentially more cost-effective option for the Jets.
While Lenoir’s career trajectory hasn’t mirrored Reed’s, he showcased his talent in 2023 with impressive coverage skills, benefitting from playing alongside a strong 49ers defense. Lenoir posted an impressive 72.6 coverage grade in 2023, according to PFF. He also graded out at a 72.5 overall, which was well above average at his position.
As Lenoir enters the 2024 season, his performance will be under scrutiny, particularly after a breakout year. In 2022, he posted a 51.0 coverage grade, which does lead to some worries about his future.
Should he maintain his upward trajectory, the Jets may view him as a viable option to fill the potential void left by Reed’s departure.
