There was a fear that Joelinton would leave Newcastle United this summer.
At the start of the year, Newcastle United were struggling to agree a new contract with Joelinton.
If that had continued to be the case, he would have been sold due to his deal being set to expire in 2025. The Brazilian could have solved the Magpies’ PSR problems, and that is why Dan Ashworth was reluctant to give Joelinton a new long-term deal.
But his departure coincided with the £40million man extending his stay, with Joelinton signing a new four-year deal at St James’ Park. Eddie Howe was delighted to keep Joelinton, as he is a massively important player on Tyneside.
It has been a remarkable Newcastle United career for Joelinton, and one that is not going to end any time soon.
Joelinton comments on who he would like to play for after Newcastle United
However, those that are hoping to see Joelinton end his playing career as a Magpie might be disappointed.
That is because Joelinton has spoke to Brazilian website UOL, and has named the club where he would like to hang up his boots.
“God willing, one day I hope to return and end my career at Sport, the club where I started,” he said.
“But I also want to play for other clubs in Brazil.
“São Paulo was a club that I followed too, it’s a very big club in our football. And I really like Palmeiras too, I have a friend who is a Palmeiras fan and he says that I’m going to play there. They are two clubs that I have a lot of admiration for.
“Who knows, maybe one day I’ll be able to play for one of them.”
Joelinton has a long-term contract at St James’ Park
While Joelinton would like to end his career in Brazil and play for Sport Recife again, that is not going to happen for a long time.
The midfielder is 28-years-old, and should be entering his prime. Physically, he is a phenomenon. There are not many players in the Premier League that are as powerful as Joelinton, and that is what has made him such a force in the middle of the park.
After signing a new contract, Joelinton is on course to be a Newcastle United player until 2028. He will be in his 30s then, and the hope will be that he is still capable of delivering at an elite level.
In truth, Newcastle need Joelinton at an elite level right now. He has struggled in recent weeks, despite Joelinton shining on the opening day against Southampton.
It has been tough for him since then, and Joelinton is now under pressure following the return of Joe Willock.
