J.J. McCarthy might be competing with Aaron Rodgers for Vikings starting QB job

It’s been an interesting offseason for the Minnesota Vikings, who are trying to make some decisions about the future of their quarterback position, which of course is relevant for former Michigan football quarterback J.J. McCarthy.
The Vikings used a first-round pick in McCarthy in the 2024 NFL draft. However, Sam Darnold started last season and earned a Pro Bowl berth after a stellar campaign. Many thought that Minnesota would keep Darnold, but the negotiations have run into a snag.
The Vikings didn’t want to use the franchise tag on Darnold simply due to the cost. So they were in talks with him about a short-term deal, but anything longer than a one-year deal, and there were rumors that J.J. McCarthy could request a trade.
McCarthy is coming a season-ending injury. He’s expected to be ready to go for the 2025 season, but it’s understandable why the Vikings would want to bring back Darnold or another veteran just in case the Michigan football legend isn’t ready or healthy to start the season.
McCarthy looked good in limited action during the preseason in 2024, throwing two touchdown passes in one game before suffering a knee injury.
Could the Vikings add Aaron Rodgers?
On Friday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Darnold would hit the free-agent market, making a return to the Vikings unlikely. That led some to believe it might be McCarthy’s time to shine, but a new report from Jordan Schultz could put a damper on that.
The Fox Sports NFL insider posted on X that the Vikings could be in play for Aaron Rodgers, who is looking to play another season. The Giants have also expressed interest. If Minnesota is looking for a one-year rental, Rodgers might be a perfect fit.
However, you stil wonder what that would mean for the future of McCarthy? Would Rodgers be willing to sign a one-year deal? Would Minnesota? Could McCarthy be traded?
A lot is up in the air, but if Rodgers does sign with the Vikings it will be interesting to see if McCarthy is given a chance to compete for the job, or if they want to bring him back slowly, ensuring he’s healthy for the future.
Who knows what will happen, but the former Michigan football quarterback will be impacted one way or another by the quarterback carousel.
