Virginia Tech softball takes two-out-of-three from Virginia in Top 25 weekend series

It was a good opening weekend to the ACC schedule for the Virginia Tech softball team, but it wasn’t a perfect one like they were hoping for. After taking the first two games of the weekend against Virginia, the Hokies were looking for a sweep on Sunday, but seven runs from the Cavaliers over the final two innings broke a 2-2 tie on their way to a 9-2 win.
Virginia Tech, ranked No. 18, fell to 19-5 overall and Virginia, ranked No. 23 coming into the weekend, improved to 17-7 after having their 12-game winning streak snapped on Friday night.
In Game 1, the Cavaliers jumped out to a 3-0 before the Hokies rallied by scoring eight of the final nine runs for an 8-4 victory. On Saturday, Virginia Tech used the long ball to win, 6-1, behind Emma Mazzarone who picked up the win after throwing four innings while Sophie Kleiman and Emma Lemley closed the door over the final three innings.
Offensively, second inning home runs from Zoe Yeager and Emily LeGette gave the Hokies a 2-0 lead, then one inning later, Yeager launched a three-run homer for a 5-0 lead. Cori McMillan ended the home run onslaught in the fourth with a solo shot for a 6-0 lead. Mazzarone struggled with her control, walking five batters in four innings, but she was able to work her way around them and not allowing a run.
Virginia Tech hits the road for a non-conference game on Wednesday night at Kentucky on their way to Louisville for a three-game series against the Cardinals in their second ACC series of the season. The Cardinals are 16-7 after a thrilling 4-3 win over Notre Dame at home on Sunday afternoon that took 14 innings to complete. It should be a fun weekend next weekend.
