Ousmane Diakite has blown West Brom supporters away with his cameo appearance in the Baggies’ win over Plymouth Argyle.
Carlos Corberan’s side extended their unbeaten start to the Championship season with a 1-0 win over Wayne Rooney’s Greens on Saturday (21 September) thanks to Josh Maja’s sixth goal of the season.
The win at The Hawthorns has seen Albion retain their place at the top of the Championship table, sitting one point clear of second-placed Sunderland who claimed all three points against Middlesbrough earlier in the day.
What happened to Ousmane Diakite in West Brom v Plymouth?
Although Albion managed to keep Argyle at arm’s length for much of the contest, Diakite was introduced in place of Uros Racic in the second half and impressed fans as he added some steel to the midfield.
One supporter said: “Tell you what, Diakites appearance off the bench was superb he’s a top, top tackler and really isn’t scared to put that foot in, impressive cameo today” while another wrote, “Diakite, yet again, looks the part”.
Some Albion fans would have been slightly worried that Corberan was going to be short of midfield options this season, particularly after Okay Yokuslu left The Hawthorns this summer.
But the Baggies boss now seems to be spoilt for choice in the middle of the park with Alex Mowatt, Racic, Jayson Molumby, Diakite and even Callum Styles all competing for a place in the middle of the park.
That sort of strength in depth can only be a blessing for Corberan this season. With plenty of football still to be played in the Championship, he is going to need every single player in his squad to step up at some point this term.
The early signs suggest that Diakite is more than capable of that.
