Freshmen Shine in Kentucky’s Win Over Missouri, Earning Praise from Coach Mark Pope

“I thought the three freshmen were elite tonight,” Pope said. “There were three or four possessions where we were getting late in the shot clock, and they just stayed diligent and aggressive, like busting it, trying to get downhill to two feet in the lane, and then finding the next guy and busting to get to two feet in the lane, and then with two seconds left on the shot clock, finally making a play.”

It was a performance that spoke to the growing confidence of Kentucky’s youngest contributors. The Wildcats needed every bit of it, too, as Missouri’s aggressive defense made it difficult for the veterans to find their rhythm. Instead, it was the freshmen who stepped up in the clutch, refusing to panic even when the shot clock was winding down.

“I was getting nervous,” Pope admitted. “I was getting anxious. I’m like, ‘Guys, the shot clock’s running down!’ But they were, they were super poised. And the best thing was if they were going to make a mistake, they were going to make our mistake. I thought they were great.”

Collin Chandler, in particular, had one of his most impressive outings of the season, displaying his trademark tenacity and making hustle plays that sparked momentum shifts. Whether it was diving for loose balls or creating second-chance opportunities, Chandler’s energy set the tone for the Wildcats.

The other two freshmen, Travis Perry and Trent Noah, also made their presence felt with clutch shot-making and relentless drives to the basket. Instead, they patiently worked through the offense, finding opportunities even as the shot clock ticked down to its final seconds.
