D.J. Wagner’s shot might have secured Arkansas basketball’s NCAA Tournament fate
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Arkansas men’s basketball team hadn’t hit a shot in 11 minutes and 41 seconds.
Billy Richmond hit a baseline jumper at the 14:18 mark of the second half and the Razorbacks then simply stopped scoring. A once-comfortable 20-point lead had dissipated to 61-60, with last-placed South Carolina looking like it would storm back to secure a season sweep of the Razorbacks.
Arkansas needed an answer — any answer — coming out of the final media timeout.
Nelly Davis missed the jumper, but Trevon Brazile cradled the rebound. He kicked it out to Richmond, who found D.J. Wagner just to the right of the key for the drought-ending splash.
Wagner’s three-pointer was the moment the outcome became apparent, the screams of the Arkansas fans in attendance recognizing the moment.
