Brad Brownell responds to Indiana coaching job rumors with a compelling answer
As Clemson prepares to take the court in the ACC Tournament on Thursday, head coach Brad Brownell met with the media to discuss the team’s mindset heading into the postseason. While the focus was on basketball, he was also asked about rumors linking him to the Indiana coaching job. Brownell, however, seemingly had no interest in entertaining the speculation.
“I’m not going to talk about potential jobs,” he said. “I have a great job, and I’m 100 percent focused on this team and what we’ve got ahead of us.”
His Tigers have plenty to be proud of after a remarkable regular season. Clemson finished with a program-best 26 wins, including a record 18 victories in ACC play. They closed out the schedule on an eight-game winning streak, further cementing this as one of the best seasons in school history.
Now in his 15th year at Clemson, Brownell has guided the program to multiple NCAA Tournament appearances and postseason runs. Last season, the Tigers made history with an Elite Eight berth, securing wins over New Mexico, Baylor, and Arizona to reach that stage for just the second time ever.
As for the coaching rumors, Brownell acknowledged that speculation is part of the business but reiterated his connection to Clemson.
“When you win, your name gets mentioned—that’s just how it works,” he said. “I’ve never been one to promote myself, and a big part of that is because I truly love it here. My daughters went to Clemson, and I’ve invested 15 years into this program. It’s a special place.”
For myself, this answer from Brownell is an incredibly interesting one. I could easily be overthinking the situation, as Brownell has a lot on his plate heading into the ACC Tournament… but that wasn’t the most convincing answer.
It’s not that I’m expecting a definitive answer on such a huge potential situation you’d have with Brownell and the possibility of joining Indiana, but he didn’t necessarily close the door on it. Not going to talk about it now, worried about winning the next game, grateful for what you’re doing. To me, that sounds like classic coach talk, but again, I could be overthinking things here.
Clemson enters the ACC Tournament as the No. 3 seed, earning a double bye. The Tigers will make their tournament debut Thursday night at 9:30 p.m. in Charlotte, taking on the winner of SMU vs. Syracuse. The game will be broadcast on ESPN or ESPN2.
