Swinney: ‘I Hope Y’all Print That’ Clemson’s Head Coach Calls Out Cornerback Group

When it comes to Clemson at the cornerback position – the youngsters in particular – head coach Dabo Swinney is certainly glad they aren’t playing in a game today.

Swinney called out the cornerbacks following Clemson’s first full scrimmage of spring practice on Wednesday and didn’t mince words when asked how some of the young corners have progressed to this point.

Swinney made it clear how he feels right now.

“They all got a way to go. Ain’t none of them ready to play,” Swinney said. “Thank God we don’t play right now. They all got a ways to go. I’m glad we don’t play this spring. They got a long way to go.”

There isn’t just one area that Swinney wants to see them grow in.

It’s “every area,” Swinney says.

“Name one. Name it, that one. They gotta grow in every area,” Swinney said. “That group ain’t anywhere near good enough. I hope y’all print that.”

Swinney added that starting cornerback Avieon Terrell was on a “pitch count” in Wednesday’s scrimmage, but he doesn’t need to see Terrell – it’s the younger corners who need to show Swinney “they can play.”

“I need to see (redshirt sophomore Branden) Strozier. I need to see (redshirt freshman Tavoy) Feagin. I need to see (redshirt freshman) Corian Gipson,” Swinney said. “Them guys need to show they can play. … We’re trying to really develop our team. We have a lot of guys that haven’t played a lot of football, so we’ve got to play some football with them.”

The Tigers are off from spring practice the rest of this week and all of next week. They return to the practice fields on March 24.

Clemson will conclude spring drills on April 5 with its annual Orange & White Spring Game.
