ESPN Predicts Who Will Replace Jalen Milroe as Alabama’s Starting QB Next Season

The Alabama Crimson Tide enjoyed two strong seasons from their starting quarterback Jalen Milroe. However, the 6-foot-2, 225-pound signal-caller will take his talents to the NFL, so the SEC powerhouse must find their next starter when looking ahead to the 2025 season.

ESPN predicted the starting quarterbacks for every Power 4 college football team next season and predicted redshirt junior Ty Simpson would win the job next year.

Simpson is a former five-star recruit who committed to Alabama as part of the 2022 class. He chose the Crimson Tide over offers from 30+ other schools.

A native of Martin, Tennessee, Simpson is the only signee from 2022 to 2024 remaining with the Crimson Tide as Eli Holstein (Pitt), Julian Sayin (Ohio State) and  Dylan Lonergan (Boston College) have all moved on.

In three seasons with Alabama, Simpson has completed 29-of-50 passes for 381 yards.

Also waiting in the wings is 2025 recruit Keelon Russell, the No. 2 player in 247Sports’ rankings. He led Duncanville (TX) to back-to-back state titles. Russell passed for 10,037 yards, 115 touchdowns and 17 interceptions in three seasons. He also added 882 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns.

Given Simpson’s experience, it’s likely that Alabama football head coach Kalen DeBoer will give him the opportunity to begin the season as the team’s starter. However, it’s up to Russell to play well enough, given the pressures of leading the Crimson Tide, to retain the job and fend off Russell over the full 2025 season.
