Report: Cam Skattebo named a defendant in 2023 lawsuit as he participates in NFL Combine

A former OL has amended his 2023 injury lawsuit against ASU and the board of regents to include Skattebo as a defendant.

Arizona State fans were likely focused on running back Cam Skattebo’s big day at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis on Saturday. But a report from The State Press’ Pratham Valluri on Friday could’ve distracted from Skattebo’s impressive showing at Lucas Oil Stadium.

According to the report, Skattebo has been named as a defendant in a lawsuit filed in 2023 by former ASU offensive lineman Mattheos Katergaris. The lawsuit, originally filed against the school and the Arizona Board of Regents, alleges Skattebo is “the actual and proximate cause” for injuries Katergaris suffered as part of an accident involving a golf cart.

Katergaris is seeking $300,000 in damages over negligence. The complaint (h/t State Press) details the incident in which Skattebo “jumped on the back of the golf cart” and “jumped up and down on the rear bench as the golf cart traveled a considerable distance” resulting in the bench breaking and Katergaris suffering “serious bodily injury, which resulted in months of medical care.”

Skattebo named in 2023 lawsuit the same weekend as his NFL Combine debut

Skattebo, who finished fifth in last season’s Heisman Trophy voting, participated in the NFL Scouting Combine on Saturday, logging measurements in the vertical jump and broad jump. He’s a highly-rated prospect with draft stock expected to surge over the coming weeks.

The timing of the lawsuit is precarious to say the least but there does not appear to be any relation to Skattebo’s pursuance of the NFL and the complaint being amended.

It’s unclear when or if Katergaris’ case will be heard in court or whether Skattebo will have to appear to testify or defend himself. Given the nature of the civil complaint, it does not seem likely that will be necessary.

Skattebo’s time at the combine came to a close this weekend as he did not participate in the 40-yard dash nor the bench press tests on Saturday. Next he will participate at the Big 12 Conference’s pro day from March 18-21 in Frisco, Texas and then fans will wait to see which team selects him at the NFL Draft which is scheduled for April 24-26.
