Texas WBB Finds Out SEC Tournament Fate by Coin Flip

Texas Longhorns women’s basketball now knows its path through the 2025 SEC Tournament and it was determined through unconventional means.

Texas will be the No. 2 seed in this year’s SEC Tournament, determined by a coin flip administered by commissioner Greg Sankey on Sunday. The Longhorns will receive a double-bye straight to the quarterfinals and will take the floor in Greenville, South Carolina, on Friday, March 7.

The coin flip came about by way of both Texas and South Carolina finishing the regular season with a 15-1 record in SEC play. With the two teams splitting their head-to-head games against each other during the regular season, the final tiebreaker solution came down to a flip of a coin by Commissioner Sankey.

South Carolina ultimately came out as the victors, earning the No. 1 seed for the tournament and leaving UT with the consolation prize of No. 2.

The Longhorns officially clinched a share of the SEC regular season title on Sunday, dominating Florida in a 72-46 home victory at the Moody Center. Junior forward Kyla Oldacre led the way with 18 points and six rebounds off the bench as UT ended the regular-season campaign with 13 straight victories.

Texas’ first season in the SEC was a thundering success as it managed to slash its way through the schedule with a 29-2 overall record. Vic Schaefer’s squad collected several key victories over tough opponents, including a recent stretch where it knocked off top 10 opponents in South Carolina, Kentucky, and LSU all in the same week. That strong resume earned the program its first No. 1 ranking in the AP poll since 2004.

While the luck of a coin flip didn’t go in their favor on Sunday, there’s a strong chance that the Longhorns will get to meet the Gamecocks on the floor of the Bon Secours Wellness Center for the tournament final next weekend. They, of course, will need to handle their business beforehand to put themselves in that position.
