Amid confusion Wisconsin’s Marisa Moseley has resigned as women’s basketball coach

The University of Wisconsin and head women’s basketball coach Marisa Moseley have officially parted ways. On3 reports that Moseley made this decision on her own. There were plenty of reports earlier today that she was fired by the University, but Talia Goodman of On3 says it was Moseley’s choice to resign.

After a frustrating season and tenure, Moseley has decided to move on from Wisconsin

Update: The official UW Badgers release:

In her fourth season at Wisconsin, she couldn’t get the program on the right track, and in many ways, it was a step backwards, even with one of the best players in the conference in Serah Williams. She concluded her time at Wisconsin with a 47-75 overall record and went 21-51 in the Big Ten. The results were just not good enough. She could have sensed the writing was on the wall and decided to make the hard decision to step away.

Wisconsin also struggled in recruiting and couldn’t seem to get enough consistent talent to raise the overall level of winning play. When Moseley came in, the hope was that she would be an all-star recruiter for Wisconsin, but it never quite came to be.

Potentially what could have been the nail in the coffin was the allegations that came out this season against Moseley. While nothing has been validated by the university or brought forth, there was speculation surrounding the program. Even if innocent, she may have also wanted to begin a fresh and clean slate somewhere else.

Wisconsin will now turn their attention to their next head coach and look for a coach who can finally get things on the right track. This hiring will matter a lot for Chris McIntosh, the athletic director, as he’s gotten some of the women’s programs on the right track (e.g., Women’s hockey) but has had mixed reviews over his latest hire, Luke Fickell.
