LSU Baseball caps off sweep of Missouri behind impressive day at the plate
On Sunday, the LSU Baseball team came into the day looking to pick up its third win in SEC play, capping off a sweep over Missouri to cap off the first weekend of conference play. After emptying the bullpen on Saturday, LSU was looking for some depth out of Chase Shores but, the Tigers were still able to piece together a win with the bullpen.
The Tigers jumped on Missouri early in this game starting with an RBI double by Ethan Frey which gave LSU a 1-0 lead. Steven Milam would hit a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0 before Jake Brown continued his hot stretch to make it 4-0 LSU.
Just like on Saturday Night, Missouri clawed right back into this game in the second inning with an RBI single making it 4-1 before a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth cut LSU’s lead to two.
Steven Milam was able to get a run back for the Tigers in the fourth inning on a fielders choice but, the second and third innings were rather quiet for LSU.
After Missouri clawed back another run in the 4th inning, LSU’s offense exploded putting this game out of reach early on in this game. Bear Jones grounded out to make it 6-3, Daniel Dickinson doubled home another run to make it 7-3, Ethan Frey’s single made it 8-3, and Michael Braswell scored on a wild pitch in the 5th inning to give LSU a 9-3 lead.
Missouri pushed a run across in the 7th inning but, like LSU did all game, the Tigers answered right back scratching a run across in the 7th inning.
The Tigers once again had to piece together their pitching staff today which could signal a new look in the rotation next weekend. Chase Shores only gave the Tigers 3.2 innings pitched allowing 3 runs on 4 hits, with 5 strikeouts. Conner Ware gave Jay Johnson two out before he turned the ball over to Mavrick Rizy who gave Johnson two innings pitched allowing just one run with a walk and a strikeout.
Zac Cowan continues to look like Jay Johnson’s “stopper” as he came in once again pitching 2.1 innings to close out the win from LSU. When Gavin Guidry returns to the staff it’ll be interesting to see if the Tigers try Guidry or Cowan in the weekend rotation but, both are so important to the bullpen.
Derek Curiel was awesome for LSU at the top of the lineup going 3-3 at the plate while drawing a walk, putting constant pressure on Missouri’s staff. Ethan Frey put up a 3-4 day at the plate driving in a pair showing the depth of this roster. After a slow start, Steven Milam has returned to where he left off last year with a 2-3 day at the plate with a pair of RBIs.
The Tigers as a whole racked up 14 hits in this game which helped the Tigers in scoring 10 runs but, you’d like to see LSU cut down on the 10 runners they left on base. Leaving the weekend, Jay Johnson may still be looking for a pitcher to emerge as a Saturday or Sunday starter after short outings from Anthony Eyanson and Chase Shores.
The Tigers will have a day off before facing off against New Orleans on Tuesday before a massive clash with Texas in Austin next weekend.
