he New York Mets will have some decisions to make this winter.
It’s already been speculated that the Mets may be willing to open the checkbook up in a major way. New York will need to if it wants to keep slugger Pete Alonso around. He won’t be the only person New York targets, though.
The Mets likely will be looking to bring in New York Yankees slugger Juan Soto as well. There even has been speculation that Baltimore Orioles ace Corbin Burnes could be a possible option for the Mets if they were to miss out on Soto.
It’s too early to know what will happen, but free agency certainly will be interesting. New York will have a handful of players entering free agency, but not all will be back. One player who will be a free agent is All-Star slugger J.D. Martinez.
Martinez was a great pickup for the Mets. The six-time All-Star had 16 home runs and 69 RBIs and slashed .235/.320/.406 in 120 games played. On top of his performance on the field, he served as a mentor to other hitters in the clubhouse.
He’s someone who, it’s unclear if he will be back. Martinez is projected to get a one-year deal this winter worth just over $8 million. That won’t be too expensive for the Mets, but they likely will be looking to spend elsewhere.
If the Mets were to strike out on the top options in free agency like Soto, maybe a deal could happen. But New York will be looking for superstars first.
