Michigan Basketball Alums Question Referees Amid Wolverines’ Loss to Auburn
The Michigan Wolverines fought hard before falling 78-65 to the Auburn Tigers on Friday night, ending Dusty May’s first season in Ann Arbor with a Big Ten Tournament Championship banner and a trip to the Sweet 16.
The Wolverines led in the first half and early in the second half before a flurry of three-pointers and tough foul calls, along with a string of no calls, led to Auburn seizing momentum and going on a big run.
Michigan’s alleged tough road was not lost on several Michigan basketball alums, who voiced their displeasure with the game’s referees on X after the game.
“Michigan getting cheated right now,’ Michigan’s April 8, 2013 national championship game hero Michael ‘Spike’ Albrecht said on X.
“It’s so obvious it’s disgusting. Dusty needs to get up in their (expletive).”
Former Michigan forward Anthony Wright also shared his thoughts on X, posting a video of a call that didn’t go Michigan’s way, part of a flurry of calls against the Wolverines in the second half.
“This game was fun, physical…Then we get five straight Auburn whistles,” Wright said.
Former Wolverines forward Zack Novak also questioned the way the game was called.
“Call the bumps both ways then,” he said during the game, while later calling out each official by name, calling their performance “shameless.”
