Georgia Bulldogs lose assistant QB coach to Philadelphia Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles love their Georgia Bulldogs.

After signing seven former Dawgs to their roster in recent years, the Eagles have now added a former Georgia coach to their staff.

The Eagles announced this week that former Bulldogs assistant quarterbacks coach Montgomery VanGorder is their new offensive quality control coach.

VanGorder, 30, helped recruit and develop quarterbacks at Georgia under offensive coordinator Mike Bobo for six seasons before leaving for Philly.

Last season, VanGorder aided a Georgia offense that ranked 12th in the country in passing yards per game (281.0) and won its second SEC Championship in three years.  He also worked closely with starting quarterback Carson Beck, who logged a career-high 28 passing touchdowns with 3,485 yards.

VanGorder, a former quarterback himself, played under Brian Kelly at Notre Dame from 2014-2017 before transferring to Youngstown State to finish up his college career. He is also the son of former Georgia and Notre Dame defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder.

This will be VanGorder’s first coaching job at the NFL level, and it is very fitting since he will reunite with six former Dawgs and fellow two-time CFB national champs in Philly: defensive tackle Jordan Davis, edge rusher Nolan Smith, linebacker Nakobe Dean, linebacker Azeez Ojulari, defensive tackle Jalen Carter, cornerback Kelee Ringo, and safety Lewis Cine.

VanGorder joins the Eagles at a very interesting time, following the Birds’ Super Bowl championship run and coaching change up on offense. He will be working under freshly promoted and hired offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo, along with new quarterback coach Scot Loeffler. Patullo marks quarterback Jalen Hurts’ fifth different offensive coordinator that he’s played under and overall sixth play-caller in six seasons.

While this Eagles hire is a loss for Georgia, who will be turning to rising sophomore Gunner Stockton after Beck transferred to Miami, it’s a huge step in VanGorder’s career and one where he will learn a lot.
