4-Star Transfer Treysen Eaglestaff’s Commitment to South Carolina: What It Means for the Gamecocks

South Carolina just made a major move in the transfer portal, landing Treysen Eaglestaff, a 6-foot-6 guard from North Dakota. Ranked as a four-star transfer, Eaglestaff is the No. 26 player in the portal and the No. 6 combo guard in his class, according to On3. He picked the Gamecocks over powerhouse programs like Kansas, Kentucky, and Gonzaga—proof of just how highly coveted he was.

Eaglestaff put up big numbers last season, averaging 18.9 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.4 assists while shooting 41.6% from the field, 35.9% from three, and 79.4% from the free-throw line. He made national headlines with a 40-point outburst against No. 6 Alabama—draining eight threes—and followed it up with a 51-point performance in the Summit League tournament. His ability to score at all three levels makes him an instant weapon for South Carolina.

This commitment helps address a major need, as the Gamecocks lacked consistent guard play last season. Eaglestaff brings proven scoring ability and should make an immediate impact in the backcourt. And he might not be the only big addition.

There’s growing speculation that former Gamecock and Ohio State guard Meechie Johnson Jr. could be returning to Columbia. Johnson, who initially transferred from Ohio State to South Carolina and became an All-SEC guard before heading back to OSU last season, averaged 9.1 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 2.7 assists before stepping away mid-season for mental health reasons. A potential reunion, alongside Eaglestaff and incoming freshman Eli Ellis, could give the Gamecocks one of the most dangerous backcourts in the SEC next season.
