WATCH OUT!! A true freshman offensive player is turning heads in spring practice

Tight-end Chase Loftin could be a difference-maker in 2025.

Florida State football will be conducting its second spring scrimmage of the year. The media will be able to access the practice.

I know that the fan base is counting down the days until the Florida State Seminoles take on the Alabama Crimson Tide in the friendly confines of Doak Campbell Stadium. The 2024 season did not go as planned as they finished with a 2-10 record.

This was primarily because the Seminoles had one of the worst offenses in all of college football. Florida State was only able to muster a measly 15 points per game. That is not the sign of an offense built for playmakers.

Head football coach Mike Norvell knew that major changes were needed. The fan base did not know what was expected from the team since he emphasized continuity. Norvell made a huge coaching hire by adding former UCF head football coach Gus Malzahn to the staff.

Malzahn had a prior relationship with Norvell at Tulsa, where he coached the wide receiver position. Malzahn is someone that Norvell trusted. It took a lot for him to give up the keys to the offense.

Individuals became excited when the hiring of Malzahn occurred. He has always had explosive offenses even during his time with the Auburn Tigers. Even though UCF finished with a 4-8 record, it wasn’t because of their offense. The Knights had 248.1 rushing yards per game in 2024.

The coaching staff thought that the squad’s strength last year was running the football, but they only averaged 89.9 rushing yards per game. It became obvious that the Seminoles wanted to get back to establishing the run.

I wouldn’t put too much stock in Florida State just being a rushing team. Quarterback transfer Thomas Castellanos has weapons around him that were added via the transfer portal, such as Duce Robinson, Squirrel White, and Randy Pittman Jr.

One pass catcher who is continuing to gain praise from the coaching staff is true freshman tight end Chase Loftin. The former four-star prospect from Nebraska was a recruit that Mike Norvell referred to as a top overall target for the Seminoles. The Florida State football social media account featured quarterback Brock Glenn throwing a long pass to Loftin in practice.

Loftin has impressed during the spring. The fan base did not know what to expect when they landed him because they already had Landen Thomas, Amaree Williams, Markeston Douglas, and Randy Pittman Jr.

I know that it is difficult to expect a true freshman to make a move on offense. However, Loftin seems to be well in a position to make a difference in Year 1 even in what seems like a crowded room.
