A defensive back at the University of Oklahoma was arrested on Wednesday, according to All Sooners.
Sophomore DB Makari Vickers was arrested by the Oklahoma campus police department for an unspecified reason.
He was booked into a Cleveland County jail, but the sheriff’s department did not elaborate further on his arrest.
“We are aware of the matter and it is being addressed internally,” said a spokesperson for the OU athletics department.
Vickers, a former four-star prospect, is expected to be high on the team’s depth chart this season at cornerback. He played in eight games last season, recording eight total tackles and breaking up one pass.
It’s an extremely important season for the Oklahoma program as they join the SEC along with rival and former Big 12 school Texas.
The Sooners will face formidable opposition within the conference this year, with games against Tennessee, Alabama and LSU joining the annual matchup at the Cotton Bowl against Texas.
Defense has been a concern for some as Oklahoma and Texas enter the SEC, with Big 12 teams traditionally fielding weaker defenses than teams in other conferences.
That’s likely to change at Oklahoma as head coach Brent Venables continues to leave his mark on the program in recruiting.
Venables was known for his defensive prowess at Clemson, and it’s an area the Sooners can improve in after several years of offensive development under Lincoln Riley.
We’ll see how things turn out for Oklahoma as they enter their first season in the SEC, but the road will certainly be difficult as it is for any team entering a new conference.
