Terry Rozier Reportedly Under Federal Investigated Amid NBA Betting Scandal
Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier is reportedly under investigation by federal prosecutors for a potential role in an illegal betting scheme, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The report comes months after the NBA was hit with a significant scandal surrounding the Toronto Raptors’ Jontay Porter. The forward has pleaded guilty to a conspiracy to commit wire fraud after manipulating his performance to lead to help co-conspirators win bets. Recent details emerged that painted an even worse picture than initially expected, as Porter was found to have even communicated with conspirators during an NBA game. More on that here.
Now, as federal prosecutors continue to look deeper into the ring of gamblers involved with Porter, Terry Rozier’s name has entered the mix. They are reportedly looking into a game from 2023 when Rozier was with the Hornets. Whether or not they have found evidence of any wrongdoing is unknown at this time. However, NBA spokesman Mike Bass promptly commented on the investigation, releasing a statement that stated the league was made aware of the oddity and already conducted its own probe.
Here is the statement, which was provided on X by Chris Haynes:
“In March 2023, the NBA was altered to unusual betting activity related to Terry Rozier’s performance in a game between Charlotte and New Orleans. The league conducted an investigation and did not find a violation of NBA rules. We are now aware of an investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York related to this matter and have been cooperating with that investigation.”
Whether or not Rozier is cleared of any misconduct, this will continue to be an important issue to navigate for the NBA.
