A.J. Brown both compliments and takes a jab at Patrick Mahomes following Eagles Super Bowl LIX win
A.J. Brown and the Philadelphia Eagles are Super Bowl LIX champions. It was a phenomenal showing from A.J. Brown, but after the game he wasn’t talking about his own accomplishments at all. He couldn’t stop heaping praise on his team’s defense, his quarterback Jalen Hurts, and how badly the Eagles made Mahomes look.
When Dianna Russini caught up with him and asked him what Brown and his teammates were saying to each other on the sidelines he kept it brief. “We can’t rewrite history, but we can make it even.” It obviously meant a ton for the Eagles to get some revenge for their Super Bowl loss from just two years ago. But that wasn’t A.J. Brown’s spiciest quote following the game.
When asked specifically about the defense and their complete domination of Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs offense, Brown both complimented and took a little jab at Mahomes.
“[Our defense] played unbelievable. They played lights out. That’s a good team. That’s a good quarterback [in Patrick Mahomes]. He’s probably the best quarterback in the game and we just made him look average. And we know he’s not average.”
Patrick Mahomes is certainly not “average”, like A.J. Brown recognized as he said that with a smile, but against the Eagles defense in Super Bowl LIX he certainly looked like it. The Eagles’ pass rush and secondary was just completely smothering all game long on Sunday.
The Eagles generated a pass rush pressure rate of 38.1% without having to blitz one even one time. It was just an unbelievable showing from Philadelphia’s elite defensive front. Josh Sweat, Milton Williams, Jordan Davis, and Jalyx Hunt all contributed to the six sacks of Patrick Mahomes throughout Super Bowl LIX. And Brandon Graham, Nolan Smith Jr., and many more certainly made their presence felt up front.
It wasn’t just the defensive front that blew up Patrick Mahomes all night though. Cooper DeJean and Zach Baun both intercepted Mahomes in impressive fashion. Baun made a diving interception which set up a quick score for the Eagles. DeJean ran his interception back for a touchdown (just like he did several times in college).
Mahomes’ final stat line didn’t look completely terrible thanks to some junk time action, but prior to the Chiefs’ final two drives following the Eagles’ 40-6 lead he had managed just 153 yards, one passing touchdown, and two interceptions. Just an embarrassing showing for a quarterback who will definitely go down as one of the best to ever play the game. And it was all because of the elite Eagles defense.
